“As nothing is new, nothing dies. Matter rearranges itself and circulates in a never-ending cycle of life. My materials come from the Earth, I manipulate them but don’t create them. I borrow them and strive to portray their essence so that art can incorporate nature back in our lives, enrich our stay here. I strive to give character and beauty to each piece, making them an expression of my love of texture, design and nature with time mastered workmanship.”

BIOGRAPHY

Hannie Goldgewicht grew up in the mountains of Costa Rica, surrounded by natural beauty. She was fascinated with all forms of art as a child, which led her to explore and experiment with any creative medium she could find: clay, metal, wood, stone, paper, glass and found objects like pine needles and other natural fibers. Her passion for color, design, and nature have converged to form simple clean line that possess the rustic feel of the earth, as with clay and pine needles. This confluence of techniques  and materials creates distinctive pieces that blend harmoniously.

She sat at the potter’s wheel for the first time at the age of three, and learned to solder and form jewelry at the age of eight from her mother. Working with a torch came naturally to her and she soon outgrew the constrictions of working in a small format. Seeking to express herself on a larger scale, she enrolled at the University of Costa Rica where she received (with honors) her BFA with an emphasis in sculpture.

Raised in Costa Rica and New York, Hannie has since traveled though Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, giving her the chance to observe and be influenced by different cultures. On a trip to Argentina she came across pine needle basketry, and learned the technique from master fiber artist Delfa Deriu. Her metal sculptures juxtapose modern, architectural lines with natural material textures. Hannie’s is a never-ending search for synthesis of the world that surrounds us: architectural balance, intertwined with the beauty of nature.

Hannie currently lives with her husband and son in Los Angeles, CA where she continues to learn and experiment.
