Mike Street

Mike Street is an increasingly rare breed – a native to Los Angeles.  In the 1970’s, his art education ranged from Loyola Marymount University to Art Center and Otis to an independent studies program in Paris.  This was followed by exhibitions, publication illustrations, entertainment industry work and visual merchandising management.  Mike returned to his fine arts roots just a few years ago.  He has been exhibiting regularly in the Los Angeles area ever since.

EXHIBIT STATEMENT (34 Days of Dance – February 2011 through April 2011)

“NOT EVERY VERMEER IS A GREAT VERMEER and CREATE WITHOUT SHAME.  I created these two mottos to permit myself to experiment and rejoin the art scene.  I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel, only to be personal.  Much of my work tends to be informal and journalistic.  It is an invitation for the viewer to enter my strange imaginative world of ideas, riddles and games.  On a more thoughtful level, my work is full of duality – simple vs. complex, playful vs. mature, bold vs. soft, and so on.  It is my mission to harmonize seeming paradoxes.  Another fun game to play!

My thread drawings have gained popularity in the last couple years.  The style seemed to be a perfect fit for Liz’s dance-themed exhibition.  The work is organic – floating delicacy demonstrates movement and gesture.”

EXHIBIT STATEMENT (RED – November 2011 through January 2012)

We live in a world of perceivable colors and spectral light.  Colors have carried meanings and feelings throughout man’s existence.  The primary color RED is one of the most dramatic.  All of my RED work demonstrates a personal fascination with words, type, and wordplay along with the images.
