All works in Diverted Destruction 8 were created in response to a challenge by the gallery to reinterpret salvaged fabrics. These scraps of cloth inspired each artist’s creative process and the works that emerged are richly varied in artistic interpretation and technique.

For example, Mary Beth Schwartzenberger wrapped the fabric into bundles. “The bundles seemed like they could contain precious writings and reminded me of artifacts… I was intrigued by the connection I felt to a message I could not read, but understood through the text the desire to communicate.”
A second example is Lori Zimmerman’s work that uses “mending as metaphor – a metaphor for repairing one’s own life or for the work of helping to repair one’s community… I decided to present a mended garment…I unraveled portions of the warp … and then re-wove the holes with red thread. A bit of embroidery suggests new growth.“

Two free Diverted Destruction workshops will be offered at the Loft and facilitated by California Fibers. An adult workshop is planned for Saturday, July 11 from 2-5 PM, and an all-ages workshop is scheduled for Saturday, July 18 from 2-5 PM. Click here for workshop details.

Leading up to the exhibit, there is an active Diverted Destruction Facebook page where California Fibers members post and discuss works in progress.
