Biography

Lek Borja is a Philippine native, and former Pre-Med student. Her decision to pursue art was triggered by a 2-year music collaboration with a fellow musician, which culminated in their first independent album, The Fall; this body of work encompassing soul, acoustic and electronic genres was released in January 2010. She then began to pursue a dual concentration in Art & Creative Writing at Antioch University, a leading progressive & diverse college in Culver City known for its core values of social justice and service to community. Her acute attention to language, visual & conceptual vocabulary developed in classes taught by important active artists, writers and advocates from the Los Angeles area. Her first chapbook of experimental poetry, Android, was made available in April 2011 by Washington D.C. based publisher, Plan B Press

Artist Statement

Living in both an agrarian and urban culture has provided me with notions of community and alienation – two differing narratives that aid in deconstructing my relationship with my individual history, and the relationship of human beings with global history.

I am fascinated by found objects—refuse that are loaded with signification; eggshells in my art are a metaphor for the collapse of interconnectivity and fragility among people in our Western society. My works explore the effects of mass culture:  The dilemma of the unique self in Post Modern worlds, and the end of interiority & intimacy; I recreate new realities through multimedia art saturated with or void of language, symbols and time.
